It’s hardly in the same league as Milli Vanilli or Ashlee Simpson on Saturday Night Live, but Beyoncé has taken a fair bit of flak ever since rumours surfaced that she had mimed the National Anthem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony last week.
The former Destiny’s Child star had previously chosen to keep quiet about the whole furore. But yesterday, she decided to answer her critics during a press conference for her upcoming Super Bowl half-time show.
After belting out ‘The Star Spangled Banner,’ completely live, in front of the assembled journalists, Jay-Z’s other half then asked ‘Any questions?’ before responding to the allegations that have inspired some of the press to label her as a fraud:
“I am a perfectionist. I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra [at the inauguration]. It was a live television show and a very important moment for me.
“Due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking the risk… so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry. And I’m very proud of my performance.”
The 31-year-old then defiantly announced ‘I always sing live’ when asked about her approach to Sunday night’s much-anticipated spectacle. Watch her new rendition of the national anthem above and a clip of her Super Bowl rehearsal below.
