Florence3 Florence + The Machine: So They Think They Can Dance?

Ever since breaking onto the alternative music scene with their ghostly hit “Dog Days Are Over“, Florence + The Machine have continued to pepper the airwaves with a well-received blend of mysterious lyrics and melodies that deliciously waver between the beautiful and the downright spooky. As anyone who’s listened to more than a few Florence tracks can tell you, their music inspires everything from introspective reveries to the hard-to-shake feeling that you’re a secondary actor in a horror movie, especially after hearing lyrics like those in their single “Shake It Out”:

And all of the ghouls come out to play

And every demon wants his pound of flesh

Despite the far-reaching success of their musical creativity, you’d be hard-pressed to find a DJ that frequently (or ever) spins Florence tracks at the club. That’s why Florence and company recently shocked and impressed fans by revealing that they’re currently working on at least once song in the “dance” genre. The side project, aptly titled “Side Project”, is a self-described “weird house track” that promises to be strikingly different than anything the band has previously released. Typically, when a musician describes a song they’re working on as “weird” they normally mean “I’m hoping you’ll mistake my lack of talent for uniqueness.” However, with a whole host of weird, strange, and borderline nonsensical music that’s been hugely successful, I say we give Florence and the Machine the benefit of the doubt on this one.
