As if last week’s lawsuit against One Direction wasn’t weird enough, Muse are the latest band to be sued for an almighty wad of cash!
Charles Bolfrass has accused the Devon trio of stealing his “cinematic science-fiction rock opera,” Exogenesis.
Bolfrass claims he contacted Muse in 2005, asking if they would be interested in scoring the rock opera, which “tells the story of humanity’s impending doom as the planet breaks down.” The band (unsurprisingly, ahem) rejected the idea at the time.
However, Bolfrass alleges that the band later went on to steal his idea on their 2009 album, The Resistance, which features three tracks titled “Exogenesis I,” “Exogenesis II” and “Exogenesis III.”
The songwriter also reckons the cover art of said album was swiped from his storyboards for the rock opera. Blimey!
The lawsuit – which sues Muse for for copyright infringement, unfair trade practices and unfair competition, and demands $3.5 million (£2.2 million) in damages – was filed in Manhattan last week.
Muse are yet to make comment, but if it is true, maybe the trio are not the prog-rock messiahs that we thought they were….they are just very naughty boys (Monty Python quotes always cheer us up).
