One Direction One Direction win the rights to their band name

I am sorry to say that you are going to have to put up with the words “One Direction” for a long time to come…

Today (August 4), One Direction secured the rights to their name, after winning a legal battle against a US band with the same title.

The Californian “punk band” sued 1D, claiming they came up with the moniker in 2009, before the British buggers had even met.

In a lawsuit filed in April, One Direction (as in the punk band) demanded that One Direction (as in the boy band) give them $1 million dollars, a slice of future profits, and, oh, their name back plz…

Not asking for much, then!

Alas, the punk band were unable to wrangle a penny from Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik or Louis Tomlinson today, instead coming to an “amicable agreement” with the former X Factor contestants.

One Direction get to keep their moniker (probably for the best, considering all the tackytastic merchandise!), while the Californians have agreed to change their name to the totally-unpunk sounding Unchartered Shores (seriously, isn’t that an MTV reality show?).

A joint statement issued on behalf of both bands today said they were “pleased with the resolution” and that they “wish each other success.” In other words, they hate each others’ guts and do not want to speak ever again.
